Are There Mandatory Vaccines for India? | Medihub Pharmacy

Travel vaccines for India - Taj Mahal at sunrise, plan your trip with Medihub Pharmacy Swansea

It is one of the first questions people ask when they start planning a trip to India, and it is a sensible one. Nobody wants to be turned back at the airport over a missing jab. The good news is that the answer is simpler than most people fear, but it comes with an important catch that is worth understanding before you book. For the wider picture, this guide sits alongside our complete guide to travel vaccines for India.

THE SHORT ANSWERFor UK travellers flying directly to India, no vaccine is legally required for entry. The only mandatory vaccine is Yellow Fever, and only if you are arriving from or have recently passed through a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission.

What “Mandatory” Actually Means

A mandatory vaccine is one a country will refuse you entry without. It is an immigration rule, enforced at the border, and it has nothing to do with how risky a disease is for you personally. India applies only one such rule, and it relates to Yellow Fever. Beyond that, India does not require UK visitors to show proof of any vaccination to get in.

This is where a lot of travellers relax too soon. “Not required” is not the same as “not needed”. Several vaccines are strongly recommended for India on health grounds, and the fact that no border official will check them does not make them optional in any meaningful sense. The recommended list is the one that protects your trip, and you can read it in full in our India travel vaccinations guide.

The One Exception: Yellow Fever

India requires a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate from travellers arriving from, or who have transited for more than 12 hours through, a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. That mainly means parts of sub-Saharan Africa and South America. If you are flying straight from the UK to India, it does not apply to you.

Where it catches people out is multi-stop itineraries. If your trip takes in an African or South American country before India, you may need the vaccine and the certificate, which only becomes valid ten days after vaccination. Medihub Pharmacy is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, so we can assess your route, vaccinate if you need it, and issue the official certificate. If your travels are anything other than a direct return trip, it is worth checking with us early.

CHECK YOUR ROUTEThe Yellow Fever rule is about where you have been, not just where you are going. A stopover in a risk country can trigger it. Tell us your full itinerary and we will confirm whether the certificate applies.

Required vs Recommended: Why the Difference Matters

Hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended for almost every traveller to India because they spread through contaminated food and water, which is a risk across the whole country regardless of where you stay. A tetanus, diphtheria and polio booster is recommended if you are not current within ten years. Rabies, hepatitis B and Japanese Encephalitis are added depending on your itinerary, how long you are staying, and what you will be doing.

None of these are mandatory, and all of them are worth having for the right traveller. The point of a travel consultation is to work out which apply to you rather than handing you a generic list. Our prescribers base their advice on NaTHNaC TravelHealthPro guidance for India and your specific plans.

Your Pre-Departure Checklist for India

Once your jabs are sorted, a few practical things keep the rest of the trip smooth. Here is a simple list to run through before you fly.

  1. Passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel date.
  2. e-Visa applied for online, ideally well before you travel.
  3. Yellow Fever certificate only if your route passes through a risk country, so check with us if you are unsure.
  4. Recommended vaccines booked around six to eight weeks ahead, giving multi-dose courses time to work.
  5. Comprehensive travel insurance that includes emergency medical care and repatriation.

If any of these raise a question, we are happy to talk it through at your consultation, and we can confirm exactly which vaccines your trip needs at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be refused entry to India without vaccines?

Not if you are flying directly from the UK. India only checks for a Yellow Fever certificate, and only when you are arriving from or have transited a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. No other vaccine is checked at the border.

Do I need the Yellow Fever vaccine for India?

Only if your journey includes a country with yellow fever risk before you reach India. A direct trip from the UK does not require it. If you have a stopover in Africa or South America, check with us, as the certificate becomes valid only ten days after vaccination.

If nothing is mandatory, do I still need any vaccines?

Yes. Hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended for almost all travellers, and a tetanus, diphtheria and polio booster is advised if you are not up to date. These protect your health even though no official will ask to see them. The full list of recommended India travel vaccines is in our main guide.

Can Medihub issue a Yellow Fever certificate?

Yes. Medihub Pharmacy is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, so we can vaccinate and issue the official certificate at both our Swansea branches.

How far ahead should I sort all this out?

Around six to eight weeks before travel is ideal, and Yellow Fever in particular needs ten days to become valid. For the timing detail, see our guide on how long before travel to get your India vaccinations.

The simplest way to be sure is a quick consultation. We will check your route, confirm whether any mandatory rule applies, and set out the recommended vaccines for your trip. For the complete picture, read everything you need for India travel health, then book in with either branch.
