Who is eligible for the free seasonal flu vaccination?

NHS Wales have published the eligibility criteria for Free Flu vaccinations for the 2023/24 season.

You are eligible for a FREE NHS Wales funded vaccination if:

  • You are pregnant
  • You are aged 65 or over
  • You have a long term health condition that puts you at increased risk from Flu
  • You have Asthma/COPD
  • Carers
  • People working directly with patients/clients in health or social care
  • First responders and members of voluntary organisations providing planned emergency first aid
  • Those who live with someone who has a compromised immune system

A full list of those who are eligible for the free vaccine can be found on the Public Health Wales website.

Please ensure that you book the correct Flu Vaccination service based on your exemption status. Our Pharmacy team will check if you qualify for a flu vaccination on the NHS. If you don’t qualify for a free vaccination, you can still have the jab privately. Getting your Flu Vaccine directly from your pharmacy will save you time and will be a more convenient process.

Why do I need the flu jab?

The flu vaccine offers you protection against the Influenza Virus. This vaccination provides the best possible protection against catching the flu. There is still a chance that you may contract the virus after having the jab, however it is likely to not last as long, as well as being a milder case. Moreover, having your seasonal flu vaccination will help you to protect those around you, as it will stop you from spreading it to those who may be more at risk from serious flu-related complications.

When should I have the Flu Vaccine?

The best time to have the vaccination is from early October to the end of November. This is the ideal time but you can have it later during the winter (until the end of March).

What Are The Flu Vaccine Side Effects?

The flu vaccine is a safe and effective method of fighting the flu. If you experience any flu jab side effects, they are likely to be mild. Side effects include:

– Mild fever
– Aching muscles
– Sore arm where you were injected
– Headache
– Tiredness or feeling under the weather
– Blocked or runny nose
– Some people also lose their appetite following the flu jab. Serious side effects of the injected flu vaccine are very rare.
