Assessed before treated
Every lesion is clinically assessed before any decision about treatment. Anything atypical or suspicious is referred for specialist assessment, not treated here. We may also send the lesion to histopathology. What it is
A keloid is a scar that has overgrown its original wound — raised, firm, often itchy or tender, and extending beyond the boundary of the injury that caused it. They follow piercings, acne, surgery, burns and sometimes minor injuries, and they are more common on the chest, shoulders, earlobes and jawline.Assessment comes first
The scar is examined and the likely response to treatment discussed before anything is booked. Anything atypical is referred for specialist assessment rather than treated here.Who this is for
- A raised scar that is itchy, tender or painful
- A scar that is growing or catching
- A scar restricting movement
- A scar you would like softened and flattened
Important: this is treatment, not removal
Cutting a keloid out usually produces a larger keloid. The established approach is intralesional steroid injection, which flattens and softens the scar and settles the itch and tenderness over a course of treatments spaced several weeks apart. Improvement is realistic; complete disappearance is not, and we will not suggest otherwise. How it works
Steroid is injected directly into the scar tissue — briefly uncomfortable, over in a minute or two. Treatments are typically spaced four to six weeks apart, with the number agreed at assessment. Most people need a course rather than a single injection.

Frequently asked questions
Will the scar disappear completely?
No. The aim is a flatter, softer, less itchy scar.
How many treatments will I need?
Usually 3–6, agreed at assessment.
Can you cut it out instead?
Generally not advisable; excision of a keloid tends to produce a larger keloid.
Does it hurt?
Briefly, during the injection.
