Every lesion is clinically assessed before any decision about treatment. Anything atypical or suspicious is referred for specialist assessment, not treated here. We may also send the lesion to histopathology.

What is a mole?

Moles — medically, melanocytic naevi — are collections of pigment-producing cells in the skin. Most people have between 10 and 40 of them and almost all are entirely harmless. They can be flat or raised, pale brown to almost black, and some carry hair. Moles become a medical problem when they catch on clothing, jewellery or a razor and bleed repeatedly, when they are irritated or inflamed by friction, or when they sit somewhere that interferes with normal function. Those are the situations this clinic treats. Some people come because something has changed — a mole that has grown, changed colour, developed an irregular edge, started itching or bleeding without cause. That is a different conversation, and it is one worth having quickly.

Assessment comes first

Every mole is examined clinically and, where indicated, with dermoscopy, before any decision about treatment. Anything atypical or suspicious is referred for specialist assessment, not removed here. Removing a suspicious lesion in a non-specialist setting risks losing the information a specialist needs. Where the mole is benign, removal is straightforward and we will talk you through what to expect.

How treatment works

Assessment (30 minutes, £95). History, examination and dermoscopy where indicated. You agree the price and plan, and the procedure is booked as a separate appointment with a £50 deposit.

On the day. Consent is taken and the area is cleaned and injected with local anaesthetic. You’ll feel a sharp scratch and a few seconds of stinging; after that the area is numb.

Excision. The mole is removed surgically along with a small margin of surrounding skin. Depending on size and site, the wound is closed with sutures.

Dressing and aftercare. A dressing is applied and you’re given written aftercare instructions and a contact number.

Histology, where clinically indicated. The tissue is sent for laboratory examination (£160 first lesion) and results are discussed with you.

Suture removal. Usually 7–14 days later depending on the site. This is included.

Recovery and aftercare

Keep the wound clean and dry for 48 hours and avoid heavy lifting or stretching the area while it heals. Most wounds are comfortable within a few days; healing takes two to four weeks. Any surgical removal leaves a scar — the aim is a fine, flat line that fades over 6–12 months, but scarring varies between individuals and by body site, and we’ll be straight with you at assessment about what to expect on your skin. Dressings and aftercare products are available in the pharmacy downstairs.

The £95 skin lesion assessment fee is payable in addition to the cost of treatment. A £50 deposit is payable when a procedure is booked and is deducted from the cost of your treatment. Frequently asked questions

Will I be left with a scar?
Yes — any surgical removal leaves one. The aim is a fine line that fades over 6–12 months. Dr Westwood will tell you at assessment what to expect for the specific site.
Can you tell if a mole is cancerous?
Assessment identifies moles that need specialist review, and we refer those rather than treating them here. Where a benign mole is removed and laboratory examination is clinically indicated, histology (£160 first lesion) confirms the diagnosis.
Can you treat more than one mole at once?
Often, yes. The number that can safely be done in one session, and the price, are agreed at your assessment.
Does it hurt?
The local anaesthetic injection stings for a few seconds. The procedure itself should not be painful. Mild soreness for a day or two afterwards is normal.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. You can book the assessment directly. With your consent we’ll write to your NHS GP afterwards.
Can I have a mole removed because I don’t like the look of it?
Yes. Many people do. Every mole is assessed first, and anything atypical is referred rather than removed.
