Comparing Mounjaro vs Wegovy

Weekly treatment routine for Mounjaro and Wegovy patients at Medihub Pharmacy Swansea

At some point the research stops being helpful. You have read the comparison articles, watched the explainers, looked up the trial data, and you are now in the position most people end up in: knowing roughly what Mounjaro and Wegovy are, having a general sense that Mounjaro produces stronger results on average, and still having no idea which one is actually right for you. The more you read, the more it feels like a decision that requires information you do not have.

That information exists. It is just not on a webpage. It is in your medical history, your current health, your blood pressure, your response to previous treatments if you have had any. A prescriber who can look at all of that and give you a direct answer is what you are actually looking for. Not more reading. Someone qualified to help you decide.

This guide covers how Mounjaro and Wegovy compare clinically, what the evidence actually shows, and how to get a face-to-face consultation with a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber at Medihub Pharmacy in Swansea. It also includes an interactive tool below to help you think through which medication may suit your profile before you come in.

Why Medihub?

Medihub Pharmacy has two branches in Swansea, Killay and Pontarddulais, prescribing both Mounjaro and Wegovy face-to-face. GPhC-registered Independent Prescribers. Same-day prescribing from your first appointment. No GP referral required. Monthly consultation, blood pressure check, and weight check included in every price.

What Is the Difference Between Mounjaro and Wegovy?

Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are once-weekly injectable medications for weight management in adults. Both are prescription-only. Both work by influencing the hormonal signals that regulate appetite and digestion. The difference lies in how they do that, and how far the clinical evidence goes.

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

Mounjaro was approved by the MHRA for weight management in November 2023. Its active ingredient, tirzepatide, mimics two gut hormones simultaneously: GLP-1 and GIP. By activating both pathways at once, it slows gastric emptying, reduces appetite signals, and improves how the body handles blood sugar. No other weight loss injection currently licensed in the UK targets both pathways. That dual mechanism accounts for clinical trial results that exceed those of previously approved GLP-1 medications.

Treatment starts at 2.5mg weekly and escalates gradually through six dose tiers up to 15mg. The step-up approach minimises gastrointestinal side effects, which are most common in the early weeks. Your Medihub prescriber guides dose progression based on how you are responding, not on a fixed schedule.

Wegovy (Semaglutide)

Wegovy’s active ingredient is semaglutide, which mimics GLP-1 alone. It was approved in the UK for weight management before Mounjaro, giving it a longer post-approval record of real-world use. It slows gastric emptying, reduces appetite, and has a well-established clinical profile. For patients who have a health history that makes Mounjaro less appropriate, or who want to start with a medication that has more years of post-approval data, Wegovy is a clinically sound option.

Wegovy also follows a gradual dose escalation, starting low and increasing monthly toward the 2.4mg maintenance dose. Medihub offers Wegovy privately from £159 per month.

Individual results vary. Both medications must be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Type 2 diabetes figures: SURMOUNT-2 (Frías et al., NEJM, 2022); STEP-2 (Davies et al., NEJM, 2021). Prices correct at time of publication.

The numbers consistently favour Mounjaro on average weight loss. But a clinical trial average is not a prediction for any individual patient. Some people respond exceptionally well to semaglutide. For patients with type 2 diabetes, both medications have specific trial data, and the choice depends on the full health picture. For patients who have previously used a GLP-1 medication and did not tolerate it well, the prescriber needs to know that before recommending either option. Average results do not determine individual outcomes. A prescriber who knows your history does. For a broader view of the options available, see our guide to weight loss injections in Swansea.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, Mounjaro or Wegovy?

Clinical trial data consistently shows Mounjaro produces greater average weight loss: 22.5% over 72 weeks versus 14.9% for Wegovy over 68 weeks. However, average results do not determine individual outcomes. Wegovy may be more appropriate for certain health profiles, for patients with a previous GLP-1 history, or for anyone where Mounjaro's effect on the contraceptive pill is a clinical concern. Your Medihub prescriber will give you a direct recommendation at your first consultation.

Can my Medihub prescriber help me decide between the two?

Yes. That is what the first appointment is for. Your prescriber will review your medical history, current health, BMI, and any relevant conditions, then give you a direct recommendation. You do not need to have decided before you attend. Coming in undecided is completely normal and your prescriber will make the recommendation based on your specific situation.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. Medihub operates as an independent prescribing pharmacy. You do not need a GP referral, a letter from your doctor, or any prior NHS appointment. You book directly, attend your consultation, and if you are eligible for treatment, leave with a prescription the same day.

How much does each medication cost at Medihub?

Mounjaro starts from £187 per month at the 2.5mg starting dose, rising to £325 at the 15mg maintenance dose. Wegovy starts from £159 per month. Every monthly price at both doses and both medications includes your face-to-face consultation, blood pressure check, and weight check with no additional charges.

Am I eligible for Mounjaro or Wegovy?

As a general guide, both medications are approved for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. Lower BMI thresholds apply for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African, or African-Caribbean backgrounds. Both medications are contraindicated in pregnancy. Eligibility is confirmed at your first face-to-face consultation.

What are the side effects of each medication?

Both medications share a similar gastrointestinal side effect profile: nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort are the most commonly reported. These are most frequent in the early weeks and typically reduce as the body adjusts. The gradual dose escalation approach at Medihub is specifically designed to minimise these effects. Mounjaro additionally carries an MHRA warning about reduced effectiveness of the oral contraceptive pill. Your prescriber will discuss side effects in full at your first appointment.

Can I switch between Mounjaro and Wegovy?

Yes, subject to a clinical assessment. If you start on one medication and your prescriber determines the other would be more appropriate, they can advise on switching at any monthly review. Both medications are available at Medihub, so there is no need to change provider if your medication changes.

How quickly will I see results?

Most patients notice a reduction in appetite within the first few weeks. Measurable weight loss typically becomes apparent between weeks four and eight, with results continuing to build as the dose escalates. Both SURMOUNT-1 and STEP-1 measured outcomes over 68 to 72 weeks. This is a long-term treatment programme, not a short-term intervention. Individual results vary significantly and your prescriber will set realistic expectations at your first consultation.

Which Medihub branch should I attend?

Killay (Gower Road, SA2 7BA) is most convenient for patients in Sketty, West Cross, Mumbles, Bishopston, and across the Gower Peninsula. Pontarddulais (St Teilo Street, SA4 8ST) serves patients in Gorseinon, Morriston, Llansamlet, and the surrounding areas. Both branches prescribe both Mounjaro and Wegovy at the same prices and to the same clinical standard.

Who prescribes at Medihub?

At Killay, consultations are led by Osama Al-Saied, a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber (GPhC number 2222112). At Pontarddulais, patients are seen by Mr Carwyn Jones, who holds the same Independent Prescriber qualification. Both prescribers can independently assess, diagnose, and prescribe without requiring GP involvement at any stage. Credentials are publicly verifiable on the GPhC register.

Reaching the point where the research stops helping is not a problem. It means you have taken it as far as it goes on your own. What comes next is a 30-minute appointment with a prescriber who has prescribed both medications, knows the clinical profiles that suit each one, and can look at your specific situation and give you a direct recommendation.

That is what the first appointment at Medihub is. Your prescriber will review your history, check your numbers, and tell you clearly which option they would recommend for you and why. If you are suitable, you leave with a prescription the same day.

Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are available at Medihub across all licensed doses. Two branches in Swansea. No GP referral. Same-day prescribing. The answer you have been looking for is in the appointment.
